Norm Christopherson, a York senior training specialist for Johnson Controls, is the author of the new book, Airside System Analysis. According to Christopherson, the book draws from his experience as an HVAC student and professor, and as a field technician.
“In the classroom, I learned how to read the psychrometric chart, but books and experience failed to relate the chart to actual applications in the field,” says Christopherson. “This book shows technicians how to apply their knowledge of the psychrometric chart and relate the chart to other HVAC concepts to solve real world problems. Just as engineers use the psychrometric chart and related calculations to design systems, technicians who understand the fundamentals of psychrometrics can determine why a particular system is not working properly.”
The 130-page manual begins with a detailed explanation of the technical terms that are directly related to psychrometrics. Following a discussion of customer comfort, the book provides instruction on reading the psychrometric chart and then relates psychrometrics to a variety of HVAC topics, including sensible heating and cooling, heating and cooling with humidification, evaporative cooling, mixing air, airflow measurement, blower and motor calculations, and hydronics.
Christopherson integrates this information in a discussion of a complete air-conditioning system. He concludes the book with a description of a variety of problems and solutions that are based on the application of psychrometrics.
The new manual includes a number of illustrations, diagrams and charts. In addition, the inside cover of the book holds a CD that contains a fully functional student version of psychrometrics software that compliments the book.
