More than 275 members of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) "Saddled Up to Learn" at the associations 67th Annual Conference, held September 29 through October 2 in Calgary, Alberta.

The meeting featured RSES usual slate of excellent educational sessions, which this included insights into optimizing system performance, refrigerant options post R-22, and troubleshooting compressors and variable frequency drives. Twenty five vendors made lively one-day trade show, as the manufacturers shared their wisdom with the attendees.

North American Technician Excellence (NATE) was the meetings title sponsor. Bronze sponsors were Arzel Zoning Technology, Inc; Cooper/ Atkins; A.O. Smith Electrical Products Co.; Refrigerative Supply; Danfoss; and Chinook Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Ltd.

NATE's role as a title sponsor serves to underline how far the industry has come in working together for the benefit of all.

"It's great to see the industry, RSES, NATE, ACCA, and PHCC, breaking down the glass walls and working together to survive," RSES Executive Vice President Robb Isaacs told Contracting Business. "Thats what will make this industry survive."

Numerous awards were presented at the conference, culminating in the Walter B. Stopera, CM Speaker of the year Award, presented this year to Wesley D. Taylor, CMS, of Carlyle Compressor Co., and the member of the Year Award went to Edward W. Shriver, CMS, of the Greater Toledo Chapter, Toledo, OH.

NATE's Carl Smith presented RSES President Streeter B. Turner with a memento of thanks for five years of service on the NATE Board of Directors. Smith also called the RSESNATE CD series "one of the hottest things to come down the pike. It creates a cohesive set of training materials that emphasize pride, proficiency, and professionalism," he says.

To date, RSES has released NATE exam review presentations on CD. The Core Service Review, Air Conditioning Service Review, Gas Heating Service Review, and Heat Pump Service Review presentations all available for instructors. The presentations are in Microsoft PowerPoint format.

Each review presentation provides the instructor with a tool for conducting a two-to four-hour review session. RSES says the review presentations are ideal to present to experienced technicians who feel they are prepared to participate in the NATE exams. Review presentations are also excellent for RSES Chapters wishing to perform a review in preparation for the NATE exams.

An additional instructor presentation will soon be released covering air distribution. Technician versions providing more in-depth material coverage of each subject will also be available in the near future.

Creation of the review presentations was a collaborative effort from RSES, Air Conditioning Contractors of America ( ACCA) and Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) Educational Foundation.
