ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — The Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International Inc. announces the revision of ANSI/AMCA Standard 230, Laboratory Methods of Testing Air Circulating Fans for Rating and Certification. The new designation is ANSI/AMCA Standard 230-15.
The purpose of this standard is to establish uniform methods for laboratory testing of air circulating fans to determine performance (forward or reverse flow) in terms of airflow rate for rating, certification or guarantee purposes.
Changes to AMCA 230 were required to add clarity to the test procedures and to include large diameter ceiling fans in the standard. Changes include the following items:
1. Removed 6 ft diameter limit for ceiling fans
2. Clarified that forward and reverse flow are covered by the standard
3. Revised efficiency and efficacy metrics
4. Revised the calculation of airflow rate, power, efficacy and total fan efficiency to be reported at ambient air conditions, while thrust is reported at standard air conditions.
5. Added clarification, calibration, sampling intervals and minimum measurement time to measurement section
6. Removed allowance for mental averaging
7. Added part load measurement criteria for variable speed fans
8. Changed location of electrical measurement from motor input to fan system input
9. Revised minimum room clearances for ceiling fan testing (Figure 1)
