Browning Expands Range of Sizes for Tenso-set
Browning introduced an expanded range of sizes at AHR for its self-tensioning Tenso-set motor base, and provided training at the booth. The expanded product range for the energy-saving Tenso-set base will include up to NEMA 447 and equivalent IEC motor frame sizes. At AHR, the Tenso-set base with its quick-release (QR) option – available for NEMA frame sizes up to 286 – will be matched against a standard base of equal size in a belt-change run-off called the Tenso-set Challenge. 1/2
2/2 Enhancements on the Tenso-set base include features that improve the speed and safety of belt changes. "We added a jam nut on the adjusting rod to hold tension on the spring system before releasing belt tension with the adjusting nut on the rod," explained Browning's Director of Marketing, Don Sullivan. "The technician simply spins the jam nut forward against the carriage, gives it a turn or two to compress the spring further, and this relieves tension on the adjusting nut so it's easier to loosen. With the quick-release Tenso-set model, we are able to change belts on a 20-hp motor in about a minute with this improved design – around one-sixth the normal time," he explained. The Tenso-set base is a drop-in replacement for most standard motor bases, and utilizes the same jackscrew design to adjust and hold tension on the belt. However, the Tenso-set base includes a coil spring inside the screw housing that pushes against the carriage to maintain tension as the belt naturally breaks-in and seats itself further into the sheave groove due to loss of mass. "The Tenso-set design helps eliminate the need for frequent belt re-tensioning, including during the first 24 hours of run time, which saves the maintenance staff at least one service call," said Sullivan. "More important for the building owner, it better maintains the drive's energy efficiency by preventing the normal tension loss that occurs over time. Some of the largest commercial buildings in the U.S. are already testing this base to determine ROI." emersonindustrial.com

Daikin's Intelligent Equipment
Daikin Applied also featured “the future of HVAC technology,” with its new Intelligent Equipment platform, that uses HVAC IoT (internet of things) technology. Developed in collaboration with Intel and Wind River, this revolutionary technology enables building owners to harness large volumes of data for analysis. Kevin Facinelli, Daikin executive vice president, Americas, explained Intelligent Equipment: “It means we will deliver fully factory instrumented equipment that connects to the cloud, with all points of information. The contractor or installer can then access that information, in a very simple installation. So if you think of a traditional integration where you map points to a graphic and spend a lot of time integrating systems, we do all of that in the factory,” he said. “The unit arrives ‘alive.’ It has a configurator. So you set up the settings around the application. Intelligent equipment also reports status. As the equipment runs for long periods of time, and is using additional energy, it can report to the service contractor that a problem is starting to develop and requires service.” Daikin.com

Fresh-Aire UV Software Calculates Outdoor Air
Fresh-Aire UV, the largest manufacturer of UVC and PCO/carbon indoor air quality (IAQ) products in North America, introduced SCOPE, the HVAC industry's most automated estimation software tool for reducing energy-intensive outdoor air requirements through ANSI/ASHRAE 62.1's VRP and IAQP provisions. SCOPE is a free custom-written software tool available at www.freshaireuv.com that calculates minimum outdoor air allowances and return-on-investment (ROI) results when applying VRP and IAQP's sorptive air cleaning provision. ASHRAE recently introduced the IAQP to help facilities trim operational costs by partially reducing outdoor air dilution by 5 to 30% through the use of sorptive air purification methods, such as Fresh-Aire UV's APCO Rack System, a combination UVC, gas-phase activated carbon and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) air purification system. "SCOPE takes the guesswork out of executing ASHRAE 62.1's VRP or IAQP allowances, which up until now, were subjective and difficult to calculate and confirm," said Chris Willette, president of Fresh-Aire UV. freshaireuv.com
New Fresh-Aire UV Control Panel
Fresh-Aire UV also introduced the Fresh-Aire UV Control Panel, a control panel that automates the monitoring of UV-C wavelength feedback, safety and efficacy for new air handling unit commercial series UV light systems. The electro-mechanical transparent box is made of ABS plastic and is compatible with most building automation systems (BAS). A front panel hour meter displays real-time UV lamp life. It is designed to work with Fresh-Aire UV's commercial APCO Rack System, Tubular Rack System and the Airborne Duct System as well as other Fresh-Aire UV systems. freshaireuv.com

Many New Ideas from Unico
Shown here, from left are Stewart, Scott and Shannon Intagliata, who lead the Unico team. “Innovation is in the air at Unico,” said Scott Intagliata, marketing director. “We’re all focused on developing solutions to bring our customers better air quality, better efficiency, easier installation and lower energy costs. And the good news is that every one of our new products will achieve one or more of these goals.” Unico will introduce 13 new products over the course of 2015. The first three are the UniZone line of in-duct motorized dampers; the eMix indoor unit for high-efficiency domestic hot water production; and the UniLight, a combination LED light and round Unico outlet. Unico has partnered with an Italian manufacturer, Argoclima, to introduce a new product line. The iSeries line includes refrigerant based outdoor inverter units that feature a high SEER rating, making them incredibly energy efficient. They range from 1 to 3.5 tons and have ports to connect up to four indoor units. The line also includes the Unico System and high wall indoor units that generate less than 23 decibels of sound, making them some of the quietest products in the industry. The iSeries ductless high wall units range from one to two tons and are quiet, compact, and discreet — everything that’s desired with a high wall unit. “The iSeries can have multiple air handlers coming off of it. We’re the only multi-split that can operate on a central system,” said Intagliata “We introduced a line of high-wall splits because we found people would have a Unico system installed in the main part of the home, but would then have to add another split for an added room or screened-in porch. Now, they can run that off of the same system, matched with our indoor product. We’re bringing a zoning product to market in spring.” unico.com
