Residential Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps: Comfortably Cool

    March 1, 2008
Products from Carrier, Daikin, Lennox, Mitsubishi, Luxaire, Coleman, Sanyo, Bryant, Rheem/Ruud, Tempstar and York.

    Carrier
Carrier Corp. has developed a hybrid heat dual fuel system that features a two-speed, 19 SEER electric heat pump and a high efficiency gas furnace.

The heat pump provides energy-efficient comfort during the cooling season and electric heat during moderate heating conditions. As the temperature drops outside, the system automatically switches to gas furnace heating when gas becomes the most economical heating source. In addition, the hybrid heat dual fuel system uses environmentally sound Puron (R-410A) refrigerant.

    Daikin
Daikin AC (Americas) has introduced a new generation multi-split product line targeting the residential and light commercial markets.

Daikin’s new generation two-port multi-split will be able to serve two rooms (zones) by using either the wall mounted and/or slim duct indoor units. The new four-port multi-split can be combined to serve two, three, or four rooms (zones) with a product selection allowing all wall mount units, all slim duct units, or a mixture of both wall and slim duct units.

This new product line is rated at SEER levels up to 19.5. In addition, the systems use Daikin inverter technology, and are all optimized for R-410A refrigerant.

    Lennox
Lennox has designed its Elite series XC14 air conditioners with precision-engineered scroll compressors to help homeowners enjoy quiet, efficient, reliable cooling.

Designed for high efficiency ratings up to 16.20 SEER, the XC14 air conditioner helps reduce energy bills, and it incorporates the ozone-responsible R-410A refrigerant to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s most stringent environmental guidelines, the company says.

Compatible with Lennox’ exclusive Humiditrol whole-home dehumidification system, the XC14 air conditioner helps control moisture and mold growth.

    Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Electric HVAC Advanced Products Division has introduced its new hyper-heating inverter (H2i) technology for select Mr. Slim split-ductless and City Multi VRFZ systems.

The patent-pending flash process cools the compressor, which allows for higher compressor speeds at lower temperatures without overheating. This process also increases the mass flow rate in the system to provide phenomenal heating performance at low temperatures.

The Mr. Slim H2i P-Series outdoor heat pump has a 36,000 BTU/h cooling capacity and 38,000 Btu/h heating capacity. The sleek outdoor unit connects to either the P-Series wall-mounted or ceiling-recessed cassette indoor units, which allows added versatility within applications.

    Sanyo
Sanyo HVAC’s Mini ECO-i heat pump system is an intuitive system that provides an immediate response to a change in room capacity, heat loads, and varying sun exposure throughout the day, the company says.

Individual comfort zones allow for each room to be adjusted to personalized preferences. Through one refrigerant piping network, units are connected by up to nine fan coil units that use environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant.

The Mini ECO-i is suited for light commercial and premium residential applications. According to the company, the space-saving design and ultimate efficiency make a smart solution for installations requiring smaller footprints and complete flexibility from restoring historic homes to highend new construction developments.

    Bryant
Bryant’s hybrid heat system includes a gas furnace paired with a heat pump, which lets contractors offer homeowners an ultra-efficient system that uses gas or electricity, whichever is more economical for the weather and fuel cost conditions in their area. This technology from Bryant helps homeowners save money on utility bills in a time of unpredictable fuel costs, the company says.

The inclusion of a heat pump allows the option of electricity-fueled heating and cooling, in addition to gas furnace heat.

The Bryant Evolution 288ANA heat pump with the environmentally sound Puron (R-410A) refrigerant, with up to 18 SEER, is combined with the Bryant Evolution Plus 95i gas furnace.

    Luxaire
The new Luxaire Acclimate HL8B series 18 SEER splitsystem heat pumps offer custom integration with Luxaire’s complete line of evaporator sections.

The HL8B series units can be matched with available energy-efficient, variablespeed air handlers for upflow, downflow, and horizontal left or right applications to provide a complete system. If required, electric heaters are also available.

Besides bringing versatility to the entire system, the HL8B Series heat pumps are rugged and reliable. Integral components such as coils and compressors are thoroughly protected, ensuring years of worry-free operation.

    Visit www.luxaire.com for additional information.

    Coleman
Coleman has introduced its new Echelon splitsystem heat pumps, providing SEER ratings of up to 18.

Available in 2- through 5-tons, the Echelon units come in four models. Like existing Echelon heat pumps, the new units use R-410A refrigerant and deliver exceptional performance, reliability, and comfort for both HVAC contractors and consumers, the company says.

All Coleman Echelon 18 SEER heat pumps come with a five-year limited parts warranty and a 10-year limited compressor warranty.

    Rheem/Ruud
Rheem Heating and Cooling Division has introduced the all-new 14-SEER value series 14PJL heat pump to the residential products family. This addition to the Value Series line of heat pumps offers an additional 13- and 14-SEER, ecofriendly R-410A solution to contractors and today’s value-driven homeowner customers.

The model will be marketed under the Rheem, Ruud, and Weather King labels.

The new PJL model uses expansion valves with an internal check valve that provides quieter refrigerant metering and a grille/motor mount for quieter fan operation.

    Tempstar
Offering up to 18 SEER efficiency, new Tempstar SmartComfort TXT+ twostage split-system air conditioners are the ultimate systems for year-round comfort and performance when combined with a matched Tempstar brand variable speed fan coil or furnace, the company says.

Two-stage operation saves energy and optimizes comfort by running more continuously on lower levels when weather is mild and changing over to the higher operating levels when the outdoor temperature becomes more extreme.

Comfort Alert troubleshooting LED fault indicators help technicians accurately diagnose practically all system-related malfunctions.

    York
The new York Affinity YZH Series 18 SEER split-system heat pump features a complete system control — all models use an exclusive microprocessor featuring a demand defrost control system.

This system provides superior comfort, efficiency and constant monitoring of the entire system for reliable operation. As a result, defrosting cycles occur only when necessary, and an adjustable balance point insures supplemental heat is supplied only when required to meet the space load.

The Affinity YZH Series heat pump also comes with a vast array of features that help protect and troubleshoot the unit. In the event improper operating conditions occur, the unit will automatically shut down to protect the unit’s refrigerant system and switch to back-up heat.
