Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) announced that HVACR distributor Johnstone Supply has been named the 2013 Big Man On Planet (BMOP), an annual award given by TRC in partnership with Heating Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI). The BMOP award is presented to the HARDI member who collected the most mercury thermostats through TRC’s program during the competition, May 15th to October 31st.
“HARDI is thrilled with the total results of the Big Man on the Planet Competition. This program shows HARDI distributors’ continued commitment to helping the communities that they serve and providing value to their customers. We value our relationship with TRC for running the BMOP program and its continued partnership with HARDI members throughout the year,” says Talbot Gee, HARDI executive vice president and chief operating officer.
During 2013, HARDI HVACR distributor members with more than 600 locations nationwide competed in the BMOP competition, compared to 233 competing locations in 2012. Johnstone Supply locations recovered 11,179 thermostats, which kept 107 pounds of mercury out of the waste stream during the competition. They were recognized and presented a trophy by TRC at HARDI’s annual conference in Phoenix, AZ.
“We're very excited to win this award. It shows our members level of commitment to doing the right thing for the environment and providing solutions for the customers we serve,” says Jeff Schultz, Johnstone product manager.
“The BMOP Award is a great opportunity for HARDI members to be recognized for their work to protect the environment, and Johnstone Supply has done an outstanding job of that,” says Mark Tibbetts, TRC executive director. “Johnstone Supply was truly in it to win it this year and their efforts to champion the TRC program have contributed significantly to the program’s growth and success.”
