UltraViolet Devices, (UVD) Valencia, CA, reports its UVC technology has been endorsed or specified by numerous federal, state and local governmental agencies as well as various industry groups and standards bodies including:
- Government Services Administration (GSA) – Facilities Standards for the Public Buildings Service (Mechanical Engineering / HVAC Components – PBSP100 / March 2005)
- American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) – HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics (2003)
- Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) – Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities
- Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center – How Can UV lamps be used in TB control? (March 2004)
- National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) - Center for Disease Control (CDC) – Guidelines for Protecting the Safety and Health of Health Care Workers.
ASHRAE, the main standards body for HVACR, also recently created a formal technical committee to promote and assist in the use of UVC in HVAC systems. As part of this program there are current plans for UV panels for upcoming ASHRAE Meetings, various UV research projects sponsored by ASHRAE and a UV Chapter in the 2008 ASHRAE Handbook. In addition two Standards Projects Committees have been formed and are in process of establishing standards for the application of UV in HVAC systems.
Driving these trends is an increased level of attention from end users regarding Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and its impacts on home and building occupants.
UVD says there is also an increasing recognition of UVC as viable technology for energy savings, cost avoidance and improving IAQ. Based on energy efficiency and maintenance savings alone, many UVC installations have an ROI of less than 1 year.
