NYSERDA (The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) and ECR International, Inc. of Utica, NY are providing WatterSaver residential heat pump water heaters to participating contractors and building owners at no charge, and also paying for installation costs in qualifying residences. The WatterSaver is manufactured by Enviromaster International, LLC in Rome, NY. Heat pump water heaters use a standard heat pump cycle to remove heat from the air surrounding the water heater and transfer it to the water stored in the water heater tank. With an energy factor of 2.4, the WatterSaver heat pump water heater can reduce a consumer’s cost of electricity to heat water by 40 to 60% versus a typical electric water heater (which has about a 0.87 energy factor). The WatterSaver residential heat pump water heater is a drop-in replacement for a standard 50-gal. electric water heater, and can be installed anywhere that a standard electric water heater can be installed, which includes basements, utility rooms, closets, and garages. The WatterSaver has the same connections for hot and cold water and 208-240 VAC power as a standard electric water heater, and also requires a condensate drain line. A qualifying residence may be any single-family residence (home) or any multi family residence (apartment building) that meets the following conditions: • An existing residence in which an electric water heater is currently in use and for which a 50 gal. electric water heater is appropriate • Residential new construction for which a 50 gal. electric water heater is appropriate. • The residence must be located in Long Island Power Authority or Con-Edison service territory.
