Carrier Facility Receives LEED-EB Certification for Reduced Emissions, Use of Resources

2 min read

Carrier Corp., Farmington,CT, has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification for improvements made to its Charlotte, NC chiller facility. Sources report the plant is one of only 11 manufacturing facilities in the world to achieve LEED status for existing buildings (LEED-EB).

The Charlotte facility is one of two United Technologies Corp. Carrier sites to achieve LEED-EB status.

The LEED certification signifies that a building meets sustainable design criteria established by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED certified buildings are judged to be more energy efficient, produce fewer carbon emissions, and use less water and other natural resources.

To achieve LEED certification, employees at the Charlotte factory developed an alternative transportation plan, which included bicycle storage and preferred parking for alternative fuel vehicles users. They also installed fluorescent lighting, improved indoor air quality (IAQ), and instituted green housekeeping.

“Energy efficiency and environmental stewardship are top priorities for Carrier,” says Kelly Romano, president, Carrier Building Systems and Services.

“We’ve set goals to reduce emissions, waste, and water consumption over the next several years. This recognition for our Charlotte factory confirms our commitment to minimizing our impact on the planet, and providing customers and employees with safe and healthy workplaces,” Romano says.

“Green products start in green factories, which makes our achievement in Charlotte a natural evolution of Carrier’s approach to sustainability,” adds John Mandyck, vice president, sustainability and environmental strategies.
