The Green Building Standard will soon have a biomass definition

New Biomass Requirements for Green Buildings Being Drawn Up

Feb. 6, 2015
The development of biomass requirements is being explored by ASHRAE, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES).

At ASHRAE’s 2015 Winter Conference, a vote was held on whether biomass should simply be added to the green building standard. After voting “no,” the development of biomass requirements is being explored by ASHRAE, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES).

HPAC Engineering reports that the committee must first go through ASHRAE standards and a public review.

ASHRAE/IES/USGBC Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High Performance Green Buildings, contains minimum requirements for the siting, design and construction of high-performance green buildings in support of reducing building energy, resource consumption and other environmental impacts. To that end, the standard contains requirements for the use of renewable energy systems such as solar, wind and geothermal.
