Big News on Heat Pumps

April 28, 2022
Fifty percent of water in new commercial buildings must be warmed up by a heat pump system.

Legislative action intended to restrict the use of gas heating continues.

This report reveals that the Washington State Building Code Council (WSBCC) voted on April 22 to make two revisions to the state energy code that will help limit the use of fossil fuels.

Beginning July 1, 2023, new commercial buildings will be required to use heat pumps for space and water heating. Fifty percent of water must be warmed up by a heat pump system. The remaining 50 percent can still be heated using electricity or fossil fuels.
