With its purchase of OYL Industries, Malaysia, and McQuay International, Plymouth, Minnesota, Daikin Industries, Ltd., Osaka, Japan, has taken a significant step toward its goal of becoming the number one solutions provider for the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry worldwide.

As part of that goal, Daikin and McQuay celebrated the grand opening of the Applied Development Center (ADC) in Plymouth, Minnesota, on May 20, 2009.

Daikin management saw a perfect synergy between McQuay’s leadership in applied HVAC systems (“applied” is an industry term best described as “built-to-order”) that support commercial, institutional and industrial markets and Daikin Industries’ worldwide leadership in residential, light commercial, commercial Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV®) systems that support the environment, energy savings, innovation and high reliability.

Already the number one HVAC solutions provider in Europe, Japan and much of Asia and Australia, with sales exceeding $12 billion worldwide in 2008, Daikin immediately gained access to McQuay’s highly experienced and respected distribution network across North America – the world’s largest HVAC market – while identifying and pursuing opportunities with McQuay to leverage technology synergies of each company to become the industry leading HVAC solutions provider globally. The opening of the Applied Development Center will accelerate the development of products that demonstrate these synergies to serve commercial, institutional and industrial HVAC customers worldwide.

Going forward, the combined product solutions for Daikin and McQuay will be marketed under the McQuay and Daikin McQuay brands – with the Daikin McQuay brand representing products that incorporate Daikin technology to preserve the environment, conserve energy and promote high reliability in applied HVAC systems.

Daikin emphasizes environmental stewardship as key to success

Since Daikin began manufacturing packaged air conditioners in 1951, the company has made sustainability – both in its products and its business processes – a key measurement of its success as a company. This philosophy has influenced McQuay and the company is currently pursuing Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design (LEEDâ) certification for the Applied Development Center as well as the office facility for its Staunton, Virginia facility. All McQuay facilities in the United States are pursuing ISO 14001 certification to measure their environmental impact in support of future activities to achieve low environmental impact.
