Hiring Your Next Expert

With the shortage of HVAC technicians in the industry, hiring the right person is key to success.

Here’s the cold, hard fact: the HVAC industry is 20,000 technicians short of being fully staffed. With a low supply, the demand is high, and the competition to find talented workers is paramount.

Despite the shortage, consumer needs and demands for service is still increasing. This leaves you with overworked employees and desperation to improve your business by hiring more capable technicians. Don’t give up and throw in the towel (or sawzall) — apply these guidelines when recruiting for your team.

Hire a good attitude
The key to successful employees is attitude. No matter how desperate you may get do not hire an individual who has great technical skills and a bad or so-so attitude.

Involve your employees
Getting your employees involved in the recruiting process is good because birds of a feather flock together. Your great employees probably know individuals who have similar characteristics as them and would make great employees.

Recruit by selection
If someone applies for an open position and you hire that individual, you do not have a selection process. In order to have a selection process you need more than one candidate. How about holding an open house? This will allow you to preview several people who are seeking employment.

Continuing training
Once you have hired the employees make sure that they receive the necessary HVAC training and development throughout their time with the company.

Use technology
The current generation of workers is tech savvy — use this to your advantage. You can use social media to recruit employees, webinars to enhance their education, or iPads to enhance their work experience.
