The First Step Towards Becoming a Great Leader

Sept. 25, 2013
The first step towards becoming a great leader is establishing trust. Once you’ve gained the trust of someone, particularly your team and customers in this case, you’ve gained their respect to carry out duties as a leader. You’ll be able to develop your team into a high performance organization. You’ll be able to deliver superior performance to your customers. You’ll set yourself apart from the competition.

And it all begins with trust. Here’s how to earn it:

Honesty. Always be truthful with others. This lets people know that they can depend on you, your words, and actions. This is the number one way to receive trust.

Responsibility. If you make a mistake, come clean about it. No one is perfect, so it’s important to own up to mistakes. Admitting your faults shows you’re mature and professional—both of which will earn respect from your peers.

Confidence. Build confidence in you team. Involve the team in the decision making process. Show employees you have confidence in their abilities, and they’ll take their work responsibilities more seriously.

Awareness. Know what’s going on in the lives of those around you. Be a great listener. This lets your peers know that you value them as both professionals and individuals.

Accountability. Be accountable and hold others accountable. Accountability is critical because it puts plans into action.
