Carrier Celebrates 110 Years of Modern Air Conditioning
What started as an invention to control humidity in a New York printing plant in 1902 has forever changed the way people around the world live, work and play.
July 17th marked the 110th anniversary of the invention of modern air conditioning by Dr. Willis H. Carrier, inventor and founder of Carrier, a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.
Carrier was a young research engineer just a year out of Cornell University, when he finalized the design to stabilize the humidity in the air so the dimensions of the paper at the Sackett & Wilhelms Lithography and Printing Company in Brooklyn, NY, would remain constant throughout the printing process. Since then this innovation has been applied to everything from malls to manufacturing facilities, businesses houses and hospitals, whose occupants are all looking for a comfortable environment.
"In the early 1900s, air conditioning was primarily an industrial application that enabled countless industries to thrive with candy-making companies, textile mills, and theaters being some of the most enthusiastic early adopters," says Geraud Darnis, president & CEO, UTC Climate, Controls & Security. "Over the years, Carrier’s innovations looked to make possible what was previously impossible. Today, our focus remains true to our heritage as we continually push the envelope to create energy efficient, environmentally responsible products for both commercial and residential applications in all areas of the world."
Carrier launched a new website, WillisCarrier.com, dedicated to its rich history, and containing little-known vignettes about Willis Carrier’s life and work. In June, the company released its newly commissioned 144-page, hardcover book, called Weathermakers to the World, now available on amazon.com. The book chronicles the entrepreneurial spirit of Willis Carrier and the robust history of modern air conditioning. To view Carrier’s history website, visit WillisCarrier.com. David Weekley Homes Presents Trane a Sixth 'Partners of Choice' Award
For the sixth time in nine years, Trane has been selected by the nation’s third largest for-profit, privately held residential home builder, David Weekley Homes, as a winner of its nationally recognized "Partners of Choice" Award.
The process is rigorous, with more than 600 David Weekley Homes team members participating in assessing the performance of approximately 150 suppliers. These team members are from all levels of the builder’s organization (executives through administrative staff).
Suppliers are rated on quality and service, and the scores for each company are averaged and ranked with all companies. Then, through a series of discussions, meetings, and coaching calls, David Weekley Homes and its suppliers search for the best way to achieve excellence together. Through this process, David Weekley Homes takes “partnering with its suppliers” to a world-class level.
Each year, this interactive evaluation system culminates in David Weekley Homes presenting its acclaimed Partners of Choice Award honoring those suppliers who earned an “A” in quality, service, or both over a 12-month period. This year Trane was only one of 12 suppliers to receive the esteemed “A, A” award for achieving the highest ranking in both quality and service.
“World-class excellence is when a company is willing to put its products and services up against anybody, anywhere, anytime and comes out on top,” says Bill Justus, vice president of supply chain services for David Weekley Homes and chief architect behind the home builder’s revolutionary evaluation platform.
“Our evaluation process allows us to compare the performance of companies operating in diverse industries in support of residential home building,” Justus says. “Therefore, as evidenced by the ratings of more than 600 of our team members, Trane is truly world-class in delivering quality and service to David Weekley Homes. I can’t think of a stronger validation of world-class excellence.”
“We make a strong effort to connect locally with David Weekley Homes team members in all markets where Trane is being used, and last year worked closely with our distributor and contractor partners to ensure the highest level of awareness and customer service was being given to all David Weekley Homes projects and requests,” Justus says. trane.com
JCI Expands Support for Coleman Contractors, Distributors
Johnson Controls is expanding its comprehensive technical support services for Coleman distributors and contractors, to include application, startup and commissioning (ACS) services.
“Johnson Controls is proud to supply its HVAC distributors and contractors with strategic support that improves customer service and grows overall business,” says Dave Negrey, Johnson Controls director of technical services, Unitary Products. “Everyone will benefit from the enhanced offering and the consistency of a qualified installation and follow-up support,” Negrey says.
