Design-Build Institute Announces Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

Bill Quatman founded Mid-America Region of DBIA, and has been a tireless advocate for design-build principles.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) announced on Oct. 13 that William Quatman, Esq., FAIA, FDBIA, will receive the 2020 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest individual honor DBIA bestows. Recipients of this award have exhibited originality, vision, and breadth over the course of their professional life, with 25 years or more of strong and well-documented commitment to design-build project delivery.

The official presentation of the award will be held during the 2020 Virtual Design-Build Conference & Expo, Oct. 28-30.

Bill Quatman’s experience with design-build began even before there was a name for it. For 30 years, he has been a tireless advocate for design-build nationally, and internationally, through his writing, public speaking, university-level teaching, legislative advocacy, and legal skills.

Quatman founded the Mid-America Region of DBIA, which started the “regional” concept of DBIA chapters, still used today. He has authored dozens of articles, including a series on design-build ethics published by DBIA, and he is the author of many of the DBIA contract forms, including the entire bond series, the BIM, Sustainable and Insurance Exhibits, and the new DBOM Exhibit. He also initiated and authored the DBIA Code of Conduct and has spoken at over 20 local, regional and national DBIA conferences. A past national board chair and outgoing national board member, Bill has led many of DBIA’s key initiatives for many decades.

DBIA sources report the Institute is planning the most expansive Virtual Design-Build Conference & Expo possible. There will be seven tracks of education, federal sector pre-conference sessions, a virtual Technology Pavilion, access to what are described as the best design-build exhibitors in the nation, and creative networking opportunities to bring this annual Conference & Expo directly to attendees.

The opening keynote address will be presented by John Foley, a former Blue Angel Lead Solo Pilot.

Educational topics will include:

• Forming a great design-build "dream team".
• Jobsite Safety
• Progressive Design-Build Successes, Trials and Tribulations
• Design-Build Best Practices
• Moving Toward a Model-based Preconstruction Standard
• Essentials for a Lean Architecture
• Advanced Modeling and VDC's Role in Lean Process for Design-Build Delivery
• Collaboration and Co-location
• Design-Build in California and Washington State.
