Four new technical sessions highlight the 72nd Annual Conference schedule at the Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Mall of America hotel in Bloomington, Minn. on Oct. 27-31, 2009. The conference will focus on education as well as many industry-related topics and the theme will be, “Lean & Green.” The RSES Twin Cities Chapter will host the conference.

The four new technical sessions include:

“New Residential HVAC ECM Technology,” will be led by Christopher Mohalley of Genteq, a division of Regal-Beloit Corp. This two-hour educational session will cover basic- to advanced-level material. Mohalley will detail the latest information on new electronically commutated motor technology for residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems including the GE ECM X13 and Evergreenindoor blower motors. Additional topics that will be discussed include the similarities and differences in construction, operation, set-up, and troubleshooting and repair between the new ECM motors and the proven variable-speed motor. Also, he will cover how the benefits of ECM comfort and efficiency now include original equipment manufacturer single-stage equipment and aftermarket replacement of permanent split-capacitor motors. Blower demonstrators will be available at the end of the session for hands-on training. In addition, attendees will receive an ECM Technical Manual, ECM Service Guide and Evergreen Installation Manual.

“Variable Speed Technology,” will be led by Christopher Mohalley of Genteq, a division of Regal-Beloit Corp. This two-hour educational session will cover basic- to advanced-level material. Mohalley will discuss the variable-speed electronically commutated indoor blower motor used in almost all residential HVAC systems for 20 years as well as the latest generation communication technology. Additional topics that will be covered include: construction; operation; set-up; troubleshooting and repair; and the benefits of efficiency, comfort and proper airflow control. Blower demonstrators will be available at the end of the session for hands-on training. In addition, attendees will receive an ECM Technical Manual, ECM Service Guide, Decorating with Comfort DVD, and there will be drawings for free TECMate PROECM troubleshooting tools.

“Energy Efficient Duct Systems – Go Galvanized, Go Green,” will be led by Chris Van Rite of M&M Manufacturing Co. This two-hour session will cover basic- to intermediate-level material. Van Rite will outline new airflow values and ductulators derived from research and the guidelines referencing these new values. In addition, he will cover various “green” advantages of metal duct including: improved energy efficiency (which lowers the carbon footprint of the home or building); using 100% recyclable steel; manufacturing the metal duct regionally (less transport distance); and eliminating volatile organic compounds.

“HVAC Communicating Systems – The Future is Now!” will be led by Tim Burke of White-Rodgers, part of Emerson Climate Technologies Inc. This two-hour session will target an intermediate-level audience and will cover how the UltraTech communicating system operates. The session will include: the market research behind HVACR communicating systems; installation ease and system benefits; an explanation of communications; the components affected by these systems; the initial set-up; and communications harmonization across platforms.
