FAIRFIELD, Connecticut Tony Abate, vice president and chief technology officer at AtmosAir Solutions, has been appointed as a commissioner to the newly launched Global Commission on Healthy Indoor Air. The initiative, led by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), seeks to position indoor air quality as a top public health and environmental priority while developing coordinated global strategies to improve air standards in buildings.

In his new role, Abate will collaborate with international leaders, researchers, and policymakers to promote evidence-based approaches for cleaner indoor environments. His selection reflects growing recognition of the need to address indoor air quality as buildings become more energy-efficient and tightly sealed.

AtmosAir Solutions also signed the 2025 Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air during the United Nations Climate Week, marking a milestone in the global movement to ensure access to healthy indoor air for all.

“Creating healthier indoor spaces requires global collaboration,” said Steve Levine, President and CEO of AtmosAir Solutions. “We’re proud to join this coalition of global leaders and remain committed to applying our expertise to help achieve the highest standards for indoor air quality.”

Abate is a recognized authority on indoor air quality and an active contributor to industry standards development. He serves on multiple ASHRAE committees, including the Standards Committee and the Indoor Air Quality Monitoring Devices (IAQMD) Committee, which he chairs. These groups develop frameworks for monitoring and improving air quality in buildings to support healthier, more sustainable environments.

Indoor air pollution is associated with roughly 3.2 million premature deaths each year and contributes to numerous health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Despite the risks, IAQ has historically received less attention than other environmental health concerns, even though people spend about 90% of their time indoors.

Abate’s appointment underscores AtmosAir’s continued leadership in advancing technologies and policies that support healthier buildings. He is also certified as an indoor environmentalist by the Indoor Air Quality Association and the American Air Quality Council.
