HOUSTON — SmartAC announced an expansion of its technology organization, naming Matt Robillard as chief technology officer and assembling a senior engineering team to advance its artificial intelligence platform for HVAC service providers.

According to SmartAC, the move is designed to accelerate development of its predictive intelligence platform and strengthen its ability to turn HVAC system data into actionable insights for contractors. The company said the new team brings experience in machine learning, real-time data systems, and large-scale platform architecture.

Robillard brings more than 15 years of experience developing mission-critical systems across defense, cybersecurity, and machine learning. His background includes work with the U.S. Department of Defense, Mandiant, and FireEye, as well as founding a cybersecurity company serving government and enterprise customers.

Under his leadership, SmartAC is building an engineering organization focused on transforming HVAC telemetry into predictive diagnostics and automated insights. The company said this approach will enable system-level learning that improves as more connected homes are added to its network.

  • Michael Tompkins, head of data, with experience building machine learning systems serving more than 130 million users;
  • Jim Puls, lead mobile engineer, with nearly two decades of experience developing high-performance applications; and
  • Giel de Nijs, platform architect, with more than 20 years of experience in distributed systems and cloud infrastructure.

SmartAC said the expanded team will help unlock insights from data collected across tens of thousands of connected homes. The company expects its machine learning models to support predictive diagnostics, fault detection, and system performance optimization.

Teekell said the goal is to deliver tools that help contractors move from reactive service to proactive maintenance, improving efficiency, customer retention, and overall profitability.
