Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS) introduced a new line of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems using R-32 refrigerant, designed to meet upcoming low-global warming potential (GWP) standards that take effect in January 2026. The systems will be available in select markets beginning in early 2026.

The R-32 refrigerant has a significantly lower GWP compared to R-410A, supporting the company’s environmental goals and aligning with the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which mandates the transition to low-GWP refrigerants across the HVAC industry. Beginning in 2026, A2L refrigerants such as R-32 will become the standard for VRF systems in the United States.

Key Product Features and Enhancements

The new commercial VRF line incorporates multiple updates that improve efficiency, reliability, and safety for HVACR contractors and building owners:

  • Low-GWP refrigerant: R-32 delivers comparable performance with reduced environmental impact;

  • Safety enhancements: Integrated sensors detect refrigerant leaks in indoor units and automatically stop flow to connected units when needed;

  • Energy efficiency: Improved cooling Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio (IEER) and heating Coefficient of Performance (COP) scores may reduce operational energy costs;

  • Wider Operating Range: Expanded heating and cooling performance supports consistent comfort across more temperature conditions;

  • Serviceability and Installation: Streamlined access and simplified design minimize labor time and improve maintenance efficiency; and

  • Durability: Upgraded components enhance system longevity and reliability throughout the equipment’s life cycle.

These design features are intended to help contractors and engineers provide energy-efficient, code-compliant systems that meet performance expectations while preparing for the refrigerant transition.

Refrigerant Transition and Availability

During the first half of 2026, METUS will continue to offer R-410A VRF systems alongside the R-32 models, ensuring HVAC professionals have installation options while navigating the industry’s shift to low-GWP refrigerants.

The company’s introduction of R-32 technology reflects a proactive approach to regulatory compliance and a focus on supporting sustainable building operations without sacrificing performance.
