The Price Chopper Supermarket in Warwick, N.Y., has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) GreenChill Silver-Level Certification award for streamlining and/or reducing its use of refrigerants. The Schenectady, N.Y.-based grocery chain is a longtime participant in the voluntary program.
“As part of our overall environmental strategy, we have made a commitment to reduce refrigerant emissions that in turn reduce greenhouse gases,” says Bill Sweet, Price Chopper vice president, engineering and construction. “The silver-level certification for the Warwick store is an acknowledgement of the fine work and environmental mindset of the Associates throughout our company.”
“Customers expect their supermarkets to do what they can to take care of the environment,” says EPA GreenChill partnership manager Keilly Witman. “EPA’s GreenChill certification award is proof to the public that Price Chopper’s Warwick store went above and beyond the norm with its environmentally friendly refrigeration system.”
Last year, Price Chopper’s Colonie, N.Y., store received EPA’s GreenChill “Best of the Best-Best GreenChill Certified Store 2008-2009” recognition — the highest GreenChill gold-level certification ever achieved by a supermarket operator.
GreenChill aims to reduce the use of ozone-depleting refrigerants in grocery stores across the United States. The GreenChill Store Certification Awards Program honors retail stores that achieve at least a 50%reduction in refrigerant charge and a 75% reduction in refrigerant emissions.
