Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. and White-Rodgers, businesses of Emerson, have launched two aftermarket air conditioning service contactors designed to support system reliability: CoreSense Protection for Copeland Scroll and SureSwitch Relay universal replacement. Both offerings provide a long-life electronic upgrade for the mechanical contactor and are simply installed using existing mounting. Both of these solid state contactors provide short cycle and brown out protection, while the CoreSense Protection version also uses the compressor as a sensor to deliver additional active protection and diagnostic capabilities.

CoreSense Protection and SureSwitch modules feature advanced electronic switching technology that has been qualified up to one million cycles, which is four to five times a standard contactor.

“According to our market research, 25% of all service calls are related to failed contactors. We estimate replacement contactors cost homeowners $400 million annually,” said Karl Zellmer, sales vice president, Air Conditioning, Emerson Climate Technologies. “Both CoreSense Protection and SureSwitch modules address the most frequent causes of contactor failure: contact damage and corrosion from arcing and insects.”

CoreSense Protection and SureSwitch modules feature advanced electronic switching technology that has been qualified up to one million cycles, which is four to five times a standard contactor. The contactor’s internal microprocessor control nearly eliminates contact welding and pitting. In addition, the circuit board-mounted relay is completely sealed and enclosed, preventing common problems with pests and debris.

Compressor Electronics Advantage
The CoreSense Protection modules also give technicians insight into the system through the compressor, providing valuable fault history information to help diagnose problems quickly and accurately, thereby reducing costly callbacks. The module monitors both the compressor and system for damaging conditions such as short cycling, pressure trips and locked rotor.

When fault conditions continue and become more severe, the CoreSense Protection module will shut down the system. Homeowners can enjoy peace of mind knowing their air conditioners and heat pumps will work without catastrophic failure and costly major repairs.
