Geothermal Guide First in RSES 'Sustainability Series'

May 17, 2013
A comprehensive study and resource manual that serves as a “best practices” guide for the design, installation and maintenance of geothermal systems, this book draws on the author’s more than 30 years of hands-on geothermal field experience.

Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) has published "Understanding Geothermal Systems,"   the first title in the RSES Sustainability Series. It was introduced at the RSES Conference and HVACR Technology Expo, in conjunction with the RSES Mid-Southeast Regional Association Conference, in late 2012.

A comprehensive study and resource manual that serves as a best practices guide for the design, installation and maintenance of geothermal systems, this book draws on the author’s more than 30 years of hands-on geothermal field experience. The text written by Jeff Persons, CM, covers geothermal systems and controls from their widespread introduction to the U.S. market in the early 1970s to the multistage ultra-high-efficiency systems of today.

Study topics include both open-loop and closed-loop applications, subsurface geology, loop design, water chemistry, antifreeze solutions, system installation and controls. Emphasis is placed on identifying common installation and service mistakes, and on learning from those mistakes.

The guide gives business owners, sales staff, installers and technicians a step up on the competition and imparts the knowledge necessary to maintain consumer confidence and appreciation. Geothermal systems represent one of the best means available for meeting the growing interest in renewable energy technology.

According to the U. S. Department of Energy website, last month President Obama “…requested a $28.4 billion Fiscal Year 2014 budget for the Energy Department, including $2.78 billion for the Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The request is part of the Administration-wide effort to strengthen the U.S. economy with energy that is cleaner, cheaper, and creates sustainable jobs.” In addition, “As Assistant Energy Secretary Dr. David Danielson explained in an April 10 presentation, the $2.78 billion EERE portion of the request includes $615 million in funding for research and development into sources of renewable electricity generation such as wind, solar, water power, and geothermal energy.”

Additional titles in radiant heating and electronically commutated motors will also be released in the RSES Sustainability Series.
