When you think about achieving a goal, think about it like a formula. Different variables such as goals, strategy, and metrics play into the equation but how? Here’s a breakdown of my formula achieving your goals in the HVAC industry.
Mission + Goals + Strategy + Metrics = Success
First you need a mission. What do you want to accomplish? Improve your numbers? Reduce callbacks? The mission should be something that everyone on your team can take part in and be responsible for.
- Then you need goals. Goals are your building blocks to achieve your mission. For example, if your mission is to reduce callbacks, one of your goals should be to have every employee do a skills assessment to see where improvements can be made. A second goal would be to do some in-house training, lunch and learns, or shadowing to improve skills.
- Next you need a strategy. This is your blueprint for how you will achieve your goals and mission over the course of a given period of time. Your strategy should include leaders for execution as well as follow-up, and periodic status meetings to make sure your organization is on track to accomplish the mission.
- Lastly, you need to measure: The last part of the equation is the development of performance metrics. These performance metrics let the management team know how successful the strategy is and what improvements are needed along the way. For example, if your mission is to reduce callbacks, start with a measurement of the number of callbacks at the beginning of your mission, then stop and measure callbacks periodically to see how you’re improving or declining.
This formula for success will be useful in helping you insure that your business is running at its optimal level. Developing a solid strategy while having an impactful mission with established meaningful goals, which properly measured, will insure success.
