Ductwork – a hidden opportunity to reduce energy loss and improve performance
While high-efficiency HVAC equipment is essential to a home’s comfort system, less visible components of the system can significantly reduce comfort and energy efficiency. Ductwork is a prime example of out-of-sight problems that can threaten the system’s performance. Energy Star data reports an average home loses up to 30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts1. Considering this data, even a new, high-efficiency unit might deliver only 70 to 80 percent of expected performance. Contractor engagement – from cohort pilot to strategic partnerships
A year-long contractor cohort piloted the duct inspection and retrofit services, focusing on select regions including Florida, Texas and California. Pilot cohort members found that homeowners were interested in how an integrated system could improve the consistency of comfort in every room of their home and avoid wasted energy. From a contractor perspective, the program also introduced opportunities to boost revenue through add-on services such as insulation and duct replacement.
Throughout the pilot phase, Owens Corning researched and vetted strategic partners serving distinct segments of the residential HVAC market – for example, certification programs – to assess whole house energy performance. Collaboration with a curated network of official partners representing elite contractors complements the AirCare™ Contractor Program’s focus on an integrated approach to whole-house comfort.
