New Product: Ultraviolet Air Purifier Brings HVAC Efficiency, Clean Air to Residential and Light Commercial Applications

    Nov. 1, 2018
The Hornet’s low voltage (24V) is specifically designed to be exceptionally safe, easy to install and simple to use.

The 24-volt Hornet™ ultraviolet (UV-C) lamp fixture from UV Resources can be easily installed in most any residential and light commercial HVAC system to provide cleaner, healthier air; improve airflow and heat-exchange efficiency levels, which can reduce energy use.

The 20-watt ultraviolet lamp emits shortwave, or germicidal ‘C’-type wavelength to attack and break down microorganisms that impede HVAC system efficiency, as well as contribute to allergies, poor indoor air quality and airborne-transmitted disease.

Ideal for all residential and most light commercial applications up to 5 tons, the Hornet’s low voltage (24V) is specifically designed to be exceptionally safe, easy to install and simple to use. A built-in lamp indicator or “light-pipe” quickly confirms proper operation by displaying the trademark “blue” light generated by all UV-C lamps.

The Hornet easily installs on the exterior of the HVAC plenum and its lamp projects into the airstream — so there is no need to open the system to install the fixture, or to change its lamp. Moreover, because the unit mounts from outside the system, contractors do not have to reconfigure any ductwork; making the install very quick and clean. The unit’s simplified design allows it to be used in several applications including the following:

    • Residential systems
    • Vertical or horizontal fan coil units
    • PTACs, duct runs, etc.

The Hornet comes complete with everything required for quick and straightforward installation, including Hornet ballast and lamp, installation sticker template, mounting ring, soft duct mounting plate, hole saw and wall adapter that converts 120V to 24V power.

“Overall, UV light systems like the Hornet can offer another avenue for complete service offerings to the HVAC contractor,” explains Dan Jones, Vice President of Marketing for UV Resources, based in Santa Clarita, Calif. “This particular product installs easily with a minimum of tools, and would be a great add-on for any service/install contractor.”

According to Jones, UV-C has been utilized for disinfection and medical sanitation since as early as the 1900s. Today, UV-C offers the benefits of reduced allergies, colds and flu in the home, better air conditioning efficiency, system mold reduction, lower microbial counts and thus a noticeable odor reduction.

“Indoor air quality is a concern for most homeowners, whether it is the spread of viruses or the musty smell coming from their central HVAC system,” concludes Jones. “UV-C can provide a healthier environment by killing the pathogens that cause sickness and odors.”
