MOUNT AIRY, North Carolina HVAC workforce training is expanding with the launch of a new apprenticeship program from Jay’s Heating, Air & Plumbing.

The company announced the opening of Altitude Academy, a training initiative designed to develop entry-level talent across HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades. The program introduces a structured “earn while you learn” model that combines paid, on-the-job training with formal instruction.

According to Jay’s Heating, Air & Plumbing, the program allows participants to begin as apprentices and advance through defined development levels. Training includes technical instruction, real-world application, and mentorship, along with a focus on communication and professionalism.

The academy is located in Woodlawn, Virginia, at a facility previously occupied by V&H Heating & Cooling, which Jay’s acquired in 2025. The building has been converted into a training center that simulates residential service environments.

The facility includes modern HVAC systems, plumbing stations, and hands-on labs designed to reflect field conditions. The company said this approach is intended to accelerate skill development and improve job readiness for new technicians.

“Altitude Academy represents a continuation of our family’s legacy, but also a tangible investment in the community that we love,” said Jamie Vaughan, owner of Jay's Heating, Air & Plumbing. “At a time when the skilled trades face a growing workforce shortage, it’s a way for us to make a proactive investment in developing the next generation of qualified professionals while creating meaningful career opportunities within the communities Jay’s serves.”

Altitude Academy will also serve as a recruiting pipeline, helping the company develop talent internally while creating career opportunities within the communities it serves.

The academy is currently accepting applicants for its apprenticeship program. To apply, visit jayisontheway.com/academy.
