Dig Energy Completes First Commercial Geothermal Installation in Boston

A modular drilling system from Dig Energy completed a commercial geothermal installation in approximately two weeks, demonstrating its use on an active construction site.

Key Facts

  • Dig Energy's modular drilling platform enables faster, less invasive geothermal installations on active construction sites.
  • The Boston project took approximately two weeks, occupying minimal space and requiring fewer workers than traditional methods.
  • Suffolk's collaboration with Dig Energy demonstrates the scalability and cost benefits of geothermal technology for commercial developments.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Dig Energy has completed its first paid commercial geothermal heating and cooling installation at Suffolk's 100MAG innovation hub in Boston.

The Massachusetts project marks the first field deployment of Dig Energy's compact drilling platform for boreholes serving an individual building on an active commercial construction site.

Dig Energy developed its modular drilling system to address the high drilling and installation costs that have limited geothermal adoption. The company says its equipment requires fewer workers, less space and less site disruption than conventional drilling equipment.

The drilling operation at 100MAG began in early August and took approximately two weeks to complete. The active work area occupied just a few parking spaces at a time.

The project provides Suffolk with an opportunity to evaluate geothermal technology's cost and scalability for future commercial developments. Suffolk is a national general contractor with projects across the United States.

“Suffolk has led some of the most complex and sophisticated construction projects in the country and has a high bar for its partners to deliver exceptional quality at scale,” said Dulcie Madden, co-founder and CEO of Dig Energy. “This project is exactly the type of environment where the Dig technology excels: a tight lot, operating under a quick, live schedule. We're proud to be able to fit seamlessly into their infrastructure and be a key part of accelerating progress from initial design and permitting through drilling and building. We see our drilling technology as fitting right into Suffolk's campus.”

Suffolk Technologies, Suffolk's venture capital affiliate, is also an investor in Dig Energy through its BOOST 6 accelerator. The program supports emerging technologies through real-world deployments on Suffolk projects and properties.

Parker Mundt, partner of platform at Suffolk Technologies, said the project demonstrated how compact drilling technology could reduce the cost and complexity of commercial geothermal installations.

Suffolk works with clients investing in geothermal and on-site energy infrastructure, including projects in education and data centers. Both are core growth markets for Dig Energy.

The company plans to deploy additional projects across New England in the coming months. Planned installations include a grocery store, a utility headquarters and a small campus.
