    AHRI Releases May 2018 U.S. Heating and Cooling Equipment Shipment Data

    Residential Storage Water Heaters
    U.S. shipments of residential gas storage water heaters for May 2018 increased 17.1 percent, to 421,140 units, up from 359,724 units shipped in May 2017. Residential electric storage water heater shipments increased 11.7 percent in May 2018, to 376,621 units, up from 337,039 units shipped in May 2017.

    Year-to-date U.S. shipments of residential gas storage water heaters increased 7.1 percent, to 2,001,410, compared to 1,868,432 shipped during that same period in 2017. Residential electric storage water heater shipments increased 5 percent year-to-date, to 1,844,636 units, compared to 1,757,514 shipped during the same period in 2017.

    Commercial Storage Water Heaters
    Commercial gas storage water heater shipments increased 6 percent in May 2018, to 8,804 units, up from 8,309 units shipped in May 2017. Commercial electric storage water heater shipments increased 0.6 percent in May 2018, to 12,794 units, up from 12,714 units shipped in May 2017. 

    Year-to-date U.S. shipments of commercial gas storage water heaters increased 5 percent, to 42,717 units, compared with 40,690 units shipped during the same period in 2017. Year-to-date commercial electric storage water heater shipments increased 2.8 percent, to 60,183 units, up from 58,552 units shipped during the same period in 2017.

    Warm Air Furnaces
    U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces for May 2018 increased 13 percent, to 277,258 units, up from 245,431 units shipped in May 2017. Oil warm air furnace shipments increased 49.8 percent, to 1,944 units in May 2018, up from 1,298 units shipped in May 2017.

    Year-to-date U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces increased 11.9 percent, to 1,247,959 units, compared with 1,115,264 units shipped during the same period in 2017. Year-to-date U.S. shipments of oil warm air furnaces increased 10.1 percent, to 11,490 units, compared with 10,434 units shipped during the same period in 2017.

    Central Air Conditioners and Air-Source Heat Pumps
    U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 971,246 units in May 2018, up 7.9 percent from 900,459 units shipped in May 2017. U.S. shipments of air conditioners increased 8.2 percent, to 673,010 units, up from 622,245 units shipped in May 2017. U.S. shipments of air-source heat pumps increased 7.2 percent, to 298,236 units, up from 278,214 units shipped in May 2017.

    Year-to-date combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased 6.8 percent, to 3,531,224, up from 3,306,527 units shipped in May 2017. Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners increased 4.3 percent, to 2,264,988 units, up from 2,172,047 units shipped during the same period in 2017. The year-to-date total for heat pump shipments increased 11.6 percent, to 1,266,236, up from 1,134,480 units shipped during the same period in 2017.
